Managing The Essence Of Life
Tan Jian Hao enjoys his work, taking care of the water production at a Sembcorp plant.
What course did you take in university? And why did you choose it?
I took Environmental Engineering. This is the branch of engineering that focuses on protecting the environment by reducing waste and pollution. It deals with the design of technologies and processes for water supply and cleaning up the environment.
I find the mix of engineering and the various sciences to be interesting. It is also very relevant towards developing Singapore’s infrastructure further.
Describe your role in your company and its challenges.
I am currently a plant engineer and my job is to ensure that the plant runs smoothly so that our products meet our customers’ requirements. The challenge is to find a win-win solution for both the company and our customers. For instance, I have to find the minimal operating cost while supplying customers with products that are better than their required specifications. My job also involves managing customer relationships.
Why did you choose this scholarship?
I was inspired by a quote from Confucius, which goes, ‘Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.’ I applied for the Sembcorp Scholarship because I am passionate about the industry and the nature of the work.
How does Sembcorp select its scholars?
Sembcorp uses activity-based assessments to evaluate the applicants. In addition, there is a panel interview and this is usually a great opportunity for applicants to ask questions and to learn more about the company.
What do you think are your strengths that landed you with this scholarship?
I think some of my strengths that set me apart from other applicants include my maturity and organisation skills. I had many opportunities for leadership positions and even during my Poly days, I took on many part-time jobs. These have helped me in my personal skills.
