Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry, Imperial College London

Master of Public Health, Imperial College London

Firstly, I wanted to expand my horizons beyond Singapore, and a scholarship granted me the opportunity to pursue overseas studies. Secondly, I saw the importance of strengthening the country’s public health capabilities, and I knew that the scholarship would show me a path to contributing towards its growth.

My first two years in NEA were spent as a Vector Control team leader, where I managed a team of officers that performed enforcement checks for mosquito breeding. I’ve spent my third and fourth years in the Environmental Health Institute, where I contributed to disease surveillance efforts for more niche diseases, such as non-dengue-spreading mosquitoes and rodent-borne diseases.

I always had a keen interest in sustainability and the environment, and wanted to pursue a career that positively impacts our society. The Singapore Sustainability (SS) Scholarship gave me opportunities to experience learning overseas and internships within NEA, which helped broaden my perspective on environmental issues and developed skills for a career in the environment sector.

During my time in NEA, I was exposed to different facets of NEA’s work from the ground up. It has been a humbling learning experience and has deepened my appreciation of the effort that goes behind ensuring a clean and sustainable environment for Singapore.

Master of Science in Geophysics, Imperial College London

At the age of 19, my desire for self-sufficiency and easing my parents' financial burden motivated me to pursue a scholarship. Moreover, my interest in contributing to Singapore's sustainability made the Singapore Sustainability (SS) particularly appealing.

My academic journey commenced as an undergraduate studying Geophysics at Imperial College London. Following my studies, I joined the Center for Climate Research Singapore (CCRS) as a Research Scientist, where I focused on sea level research. This pivotal experience set the course for my career as a Climate Scientist. NEA then gave me the opportunity to pursue my doctorate on a part-time basis. I am eager to make meaningful contributions to the sea level research team at CCRS.

Inspired by my love for the outdoors, I hoped to play a part in protecting the environment and public health. This motivated me to apply for the Singapore Sustainability (SS) Scholarship. I believe that our actions today dictate the future of the Earth, and being in NEA enables me to contribute to the environmental causes.

Being a SS Scholar allowed me to study overseas. When I joined NEA, there are job rotations, structured trainings, and professional development programmes which are great opportunities allowing me to continually grow, develop and broaden my horizons. The journey has been challenging but fulfilling, being in a service that leads the charge to contribute to my aspirations.
